Venipuncture for Radiologic Technologists

This program for the Radiologic Technologist meets the State of California Health and Safety Code 106985 requirements for the 10 hours of didactic education and 10 practice venipunctures on a manikin. Participants must attend both days to receive credit, as well as successfully complete the didactic and clinical portions of the course.

To receive the California State-recognized Certificate of Completion, each student must complete 10 successful venipunctures on live subjects monitored by an onsite physician or registered nurse in the clinical environment. Each student will receive a sign-off sheet to utilize at their facility in order to complete the remaining venipunctures.

Objectives: At the completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
1. Discuss the anatomy and physiology of venipuncture sites.
2. Demonstrate proper use of venipuncture instruments, intravenous solutions, and related equipment.
3. Demonstrate correct puncture techniques.
4. Demonstrate proper techniques for intravenous line establishment.
5. Discuss the hazards and complications of venipuncture as well as the proper response to each.
6. Discuss proper post-puncture care.
7. Discuss the different contrast media agents utilized for radiologic procedures.
8. Discuss proper procedures for administering contrast agents.
9. Discuss the composition and purpose of antianaphylaxis trays and the proper usage of each item.
10. Discusses first aid and basic CPR actions to take if needed.
11. Perform at least 10 venipunctures on the manikin with correct technique.


Please Note: Students who arrive after the 15 minute grace period will NOT be allowed to attend the course.
Professional attire/scrubs are expected to be worn when attending any Flex Ed course.
